OVERVIEW

The “Guang Ming Light” is an annual event in Taiwan where people pray for a safe year ahead. In the past, the visual design of temple fairs was not given much attention by the public. Therefore, I hoped to create a new visual image for this event by changing the traditional concept.

Today, due to the rapid development of technology, members of the younger generation are known as, "digital natives". As a result, they are deeply influenced by their smart phones. I use vibrant colors and font combinations to create a style that embodies, "Acid Graphics", showcasing a technological feel and giving traditional designs a fresh new look.

The Arcane Ascension​

OVERVIEW

A forgotten sanctuary whispering through the mist of the ancient bamboo forest.

Background information

Early Taiwan saw many parents unable to care for their own children while working; therefore, they entrusted their children to be raised by their grandparents. This led to the formation of grandparent families. However, the elderly were often at a disadvantage and were unable to care for the children. As a result, they took the children to temples, where they would grow up with their peers. The economic source of the temples was the wealth of their followers, which gave them the ability to provide support.

Symbol Concept

Taoism has San Qing Dao Zu: Yuanshi Tianzun, Lingbao Tianzun, and Daode Tianzun. These three are regarded as the spiritual leaders of Daoism. Yuanshi Tianzun symbolizes the creation of all things and holds the highest position among the gods. Lingbao Tianzun teaches the ideology of the Dao, while Daode Tianzun, also known as Laozi, is the founder and leader of Taoism. From these three gods, three interesting character emblems are established to symbolize their roles.

Printing and Application

In order to promote the ”Guang Ming Light“ activity more effectively, I designed printed materials for publicity purposes. By using strong and powerful colors, we aimed to attract more believers to come and pray. It was also hoped that by simulating the main visual, a new style would be added to traditional folk activities in the future.

Bus Advertisement

I chose to use tour buses as an extension of the visual design because early Taiwan's Guang Ming Light was a large-scale event often arranged by travel agencies, bringing large crowds of people to pray for blessings. This design concept creates a connection to traditional temple activities.
